About Us

The AAUW South Lake Tahoe Branch was established in 1964 by a group of women who discovered they were continually working together to contribute to the quality of the education system for their children.  They had enjoyed being members of an AAUW branch where they lived In the San Francisco Bay Area and together they formed the South Lake Tahoe Branch.  One of the first projects they tackled was working with other parents in the area to pass a bond issue to build new schools.  The Tahoe community has continued to benefit from the efforts of these women and the excellent educational facilities.

To achieve our mission, we hold occasional fund raising events, the most notable being our biennial Home Tour.  With the funds raised we provide scholarships in two areas.  The first is our scholarship program for women graduates of Lake Tahoe Community College who are going on to a four-year college to complete their degree work.  These awards are also supported by an endowment fund that we have established at the college.  The second area is scholarships for the middle school to high school girls to attend Tech Trek, a week-long summer math/science experience held at UC Davis. All programs are supported financially by our membership as well as our fund-raising activities.

Our monthly branch meetings provide interesting and educational programs and are open to the public, as well as members.  The meetings are usually held on the second Saturday of each month at 11:30 AM at LTCC or second Wednesday at 4:30 PM and are published in our newsletter and The Tahoe Daily Tribune.

Additionally, groups have been formed based on member interest.  All members are welcome to participate in as many interest groups as they desire.

While our goals are consistent with the national organization, we also strive to design and offer programs, activities, and philanthropies that are relevant to the needs, interests, and betterment of our local community.

Our local branch continues to offer connection with like minded women through activities and advocacy aimed at improving equity for young women in education at the community, state, and national level.
